There are a lot of musical influences and sources that Daniel Donato has drawn on during his career and that inform his latest album, Horizon (Retrace Music), his second all-original album. But within those, Donato has carved out a unique and individualized spot for himself, one that speaks to the deep American music heritage that inspires him — and that he’s pushing towards the future with inspired, intentional vigor.

He calls it Cosmic Country, a moniker that’s both self-descriptive and a statement of purpose. It’s an organic rock band aesthetic with plenty of roadhouse twang; a showcase for Donato’s instrumental virtuosity and facility for melodically infectious songcraft. Bridging Nashville and the Great West, Kentucky and mid-60s northern California, tie-dye and plaid, it’s a world of his own, and a wide world of musical adventure at that.

While growing up in Nashville his his father, who turned his young son on to music of all genres, suggested the fledgling and industriously minded (even at just 14) artist start busking in Nashville’s lower Broadway area and outside concerts, for eight hours at a time on the weekends. One night, the two happened by Robert’s Western World where legendary honky-tonk local mainstay the Don Kelly Band were performing. Donato eventually became a member of the band, playing four hours a night at Robert’s (464 shows in total).

Horizons is the follow up to 2023’s Reflector, which received critical acclaim from a wide range of press, including No Depression, Glide Magazine, Magnet Magazine, and more. With a slight grin, he sips his coffee and leans back, one arm draped casually and comfortably over the chair.

“I’m kind of settling into my age, into allowing myself to be happy,” the 33-year-old says. “For years, I led myself and the people around me into a lot of unnecessary darkness. And now, I’ve learned how to give and receive affection — it’s helped heal a lot of parts of myself.”

Tod’s demeanor is a far cry from his usual stiff posture stance with arms folded, this permeating sense of trepidation and scrutiny for what trouble may be coming down the pike. The relaxed, calm aura is a sign of a human being who has overcome lifelong personal demons, one who has finally become liberated — not only in his personal life, but also his music.

“This latest record is so unusual for what I do,” Tod says. “It’s almost a spite album, to prove what I can do as a writer in whatever medium I step into.”

Titled Shooting Star, the album carves a fresh creative path for Tod, a storied singer-songwriter and frontman of Lost Dog Street Band. The self-proclaimed “proprietor of misery,” Tod finds himself transcending into a life of gratitude, patience, and stability.

“People evolve and change. You’re growing as a person,” Tod says. “If you want to get healthier, you have to start intentionally behaving like a healthy person. You have to look around you and adapt to those things — if you don’t change your identity, it’s hard to change yourself.”

For this latest solo endeavor, Tod tapped some of Nashville’s finest to conjure country gold. Shifting from his signature somber tone of struggle and survival, Tod and his coal fire throat radiate a feeling of clarity and new beginnings in the face of adversity. The result is this intrinsic, musical crossroads — more Hank Williams than Bob Wills, more Marty Stuart than George Jones.

“Most of my career has been laser-focused on poetic, piercing songwriting in mainly a folk tradition.” Tod says. “I wanted to prove to myself and the industry that I could write an elite country record with ease. Either way, if I didn’t accomplish that goal, I sure as hell came closer than anyone on pop country radio.”

The inspiration for the project struck in the summer of 2022, with Tod penning the opening track

“I Ain’t The Man.” From there, it became this unrelenting, internal thirst for Tod to begin

“imagining what all I could do within a genre slightly outside my comfort zone.”

With a thick thread of honkytonk woven into it, the album leaves fingerprints on seemingly every style of country, from outlaw to red dirt, folk to indie, the culmination of which being a happily welcomed challenge for Tod — the ethos of his life and career at this juncture howling loudly

“obstacles are opportunities.”

Shooting Star is also a full-circle moment for Tod. Coming of age in Music City, he found himself squarely in the midst of rough-n-tumble Lower Broadway. Busking on street corners playing Woody Guthrie and Jim Ringer tunes for spare change. And getting kicked out of Robert’s Western World or Layla’s Honky Tonk “more times than most regulars had been before the age of 20.”

“Growing up on Lower Broad, the influences that I received kind of came later in life,” Tod says. “That sound was always on the tip of my tongue, but it wasn’t until about five or six years ago when I started getting back into my roots, really listening to country again and enjoying honkytonk — this record feels like a homecoming.”

Tod views Shooting Star as a rebuttal to the current state of affairs, for good or ill, of his native Nashville and of the music industry itself. The 10-song LP harkens to the golden era of country music. It’s taking “three chords and the truth” and actually holding yourself to those standards of vulnerability and authenticity.

“I want to make music that helps people on a personal basis, to work through their own trauma and problems, to better serve their families, themselves, and their communities,” Tod says. “As a society, we need to reform back to our spirit. And my intent is to direct people back to their spirit — mind, body, and soul.”

In reflection of the long, arduous road to where he firmly stands today, Tod acknowledges his whirlwind, volatile past. But, the troubadour does so with pure intent, pushing headlong into this unwritten chapter of possibility and purpose.

“Right now, I’m very excited for the future, and very thankful,” Tod says. “I’ve worked incredibly hard and made changes in my life — I’m becoming the person I’ve longed to become for years.”

Hailing from the North Carolina countryside, or “The Middle of Nowhere,” as it’s proudly dubbed on their debut album, the 6 headed musical monster known as 'Big Something' has steadily become one of the most unique and exciting rock bands to emerge from the Southeast. Their musical alchemy is deeply rooted in the strong bond of its members—Nick MacDaniels [lead vocals, guitar], Jesse Hensley [lead guitar, vocals], Casey Cranford [saxophone, E.W.I. “Electronic Wind Instrument”], Ben Vinograd [drums], Josh Kagel [keys, trumpet], and Matt Laird [bass].

After over a decade of touring together with 7 full-length studio albums and even their own Summer music festival The Big What?, Big Something has emerged as a grassroots phenomenon in the live music community.

“I’m proud that we’ve stuck together through all of this,” notes Nick. “We have our own unique thing as a group, and I’m very excited about where it’s always been going.”

The band has progressively evolved their catalog with each subsequent release. From their debut album Stories from the Middle of Nowhere in 2010, through fan favorites a la Big Something [2013], Truth Serum [2014], Tumbleweed [2017], The Otherside [2018], and Escape [2020], they have constantly pushed the boundaries of their sound. Among many highlights, “Song For Us” and “Love Generator” have accumulated millions of Spotify streams, while their performances at Sweetwater 420 Fest, Lock’n, Electric Forest, Peach Music Festival, Summer Camp, High Sierra and 10 years of their own festival, The Big What? have further solidified their place as luminaries of progressive improvisational rock.

Their seventh studio album, Headspace [out 11/17 on Truth Serum Records], is significant for the band in many ways. Featuring a collection of songs written over the past few years as the world emerged from a strange moment in history, Headspace was inspired in large part by the ongoing conversations surrounding mental health. As the band releases each new single, they will also spotlight several non-profit organizations focused on helping people navigate mental health and wellness. Headspace will also mark the band’s last studio release with founding members Doug Marshall (bass) and Josh Kagel (keys/trumpet), both of whom announced their retirement from touring in 2023.

For the new album, Big Something journeyed to Cannon Falls, MN to track at the legendary Pachyderm Recording Studios— birthplace of Nirvana’s In Utero, where they lived together in a guest house overlooking a serene trout stream tucked away into nature.

“We cooked dinner together every night, recorded all day, and really enjoyed a special moment in time making this album,” Nick goes on. “It was such a cool bonding experience. We really locked in together musically and tried to tap into the special energy at Pachyderm.”

That palpable energy surges through the album’s lead track and first single, “The Mountain.” The six minute-plus epic sinks its teeth in and clenches its jaw, twisting and turning through organ-laden fuzz towards a rapturous refrain. “The Mountain” carries deeper meaning for the tight-knit group, and the lyrics pay homage to Nick’s lifelong best friend and frequent collaborator Paul Interdonato, who wrote a majority of Big Something’s lyrics before his tragic passing in 2017.

“‘The Mountain’ started with one of the last lyrics I have written down in a journal from Paul,” Nick goes on. “Coming up the mountain, I can see it all again - the chorus is a metaphor for getting over trauma.”

Interdonato’s struggle also inspired the theme of the single “Clouds”. A collaboration with Andy Frasco and Justin Osborne of SUSTO, the gripping work delves into dark subject matter over a blissful cloud of catchy sounds. Musically, this is perhaps the most salient display of the breadth of Big Something’s jaw-dropping musicianship and genre fluency. The slinky earworm isn’t easily forgotten, and showcases head-nodding bass, slick guitars, and keys locked into a funky intergalactic strut, giving way to a distortion-boosted refrain and synth solo.

“I went to write with Andy in Denver and played him a rough recording of the instrumental,” recalls Nick. “It didn’t have any lyrics yet, so he was helping me think of ideas. We landed on the thought of ‘living in the clouds’ as a metaphor for addiction. And the character in the song is a close friend who may never come back down.”

Big Something leaned into collaboration yet again on “Bob and Weave,” a track originally penned by another close friend and frequent collaborator, Josh Phillips from Asheville, NC. The buoyant track sees otherworldly electronics wheeze as the riff slinks beneath swaggering verses and an uplifting chorus.

“Getting to know Josh has been so much fun. He’s an incredible singer-songwriter and reminds me a lot of Paul in certain ways. From what I can tell, ‘Bob and Weave’ is basically about waking up and trying to get through the anxiety of life with the help of friendship — and maybe some cannabis,” MacDaniels added.

Then, there’s “Algorithm,” a track that serves as a spiritual predecessor to fan favorite “Love Generator.”

“It's sort of like a prequel or counterpoint to ‘Love Generator’ which takes place in a distant future where machines learn to love and become human. In ‘Algorithm,’ humans are shutting down and turning into machines,” he elaborates.

Rounding out the album, the band brought everything full circle with a final nod to Paul by re-recording the first Big Something song ever written, “Amanda Lynn.” Originally released on their 2010 debut album Stories From The Middle of Nowhere, “Amanda Lynn” features the first lyrics that Interdonato contributed to the band.

“We thought it was a cool way to connect everything to the roots of our story,” MacDaniels explained.

In the end, Big Something's tale is a testament to the power of friendship and that bond burns brighter now than ever as the band prepares to journey across the US for their recently announced HEADSPACE Tour - their biggest headlining tour to date.

“This started out as a group of friends, and it’s turned into a family over the years. I love this music and this band and what we do and I hope people can hear and feel that in what we create.”

Virginia’s Kendall Street Company are no strangers to having a wild time. What started as casual songwriting and jam sessions among five young lads a decade ago has evolved into a super-tight, prolific touring machine. Including elements of crowd participation, off-the-cuff comedy, haphazard choreography, musical improvisation, and surprise guests, every Kendall Street Company performance is an experience unlike any other. Some genre purists might classify them as a jam band; their shows and albums are all over the place. While this is great for their collective artistic expression as five young creatives with a myriad of ideas and influences, it is sometimes difficult to convey their exact sound to the uninitiated. You’ll just have to come see it for yourself. If you like space operas, heartfelt love ballads, songs about misfit sea creatures, soaring guitar and saxophone solos, folksy songwriting, heady jams, or just having a lot of fun, KSC might just have something for you. They even have a cute little mascot named Lenny the Lemon. He has a PhD. All hail Lenny!

The Company is relentlessly active in the studio as well as on the road, and in mid-2026 released two singles produced by Dave Schools of Widespread Panic: a cover of Sun Ra’s “Space is the Place” in the spirit of Col. Bruce Hampton, and the original tune “So Will The Robots Be.” Their eighth studio record (you read that right!), Yodeling Astroman, mixed and co-produced by Scott Gordon (Ringo Starr, Alanis Morissette) will be released on October 23rd, 2026 through Gitcha Records. Fans can also take a deep dive into their massive live vault on nugs.net or on their own self-run website subscription, which features multitrack recordings of otherwise unreleased jams and wildly varied covers, ranging from rock staples like the Grateful Dead, The Beatles, Talking Heads, and ZZ Top to modern acts of all genres: Billie Strings, Soulja Boy, Cake, Chappell Roan, and Billie Eilish, just to name a few. Live in ‘25, a compilation released in early 2026 and available on all major streaming services, is a great place to start.

Kendall Street Company is: Louis Smith [Rhythm Guitar/Lead Vox], Brian Roy [Bass], Ryan Wood [Drums], Ben Laderberg [Lead Guitar], and Jake Vanaman [Saxophone/Keys]. For such a young band, their live resume is stacked: they’ve graced festival stages at Summer Camp, Jam Cruise, LOCKN’, High Sierra, Resonance, Floydfest, Hulaween, Peach Fest, Northlands, and Rooster Walk. Along the way, they’ve shared the stage with Goose, Umphrey's McGee, Papadosio, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Leftover Salmon, Andy Frasco, The Infamous Stringdusters, Big Something, and Melvin Seals & JGB, while featuring quite the rotation of special guests, including Keller Williams, Ron Holloway, Andy Thorn, Andy Hall, and Sawborg Destructo of GWAR

If there is something strange in your neighborhood, it's just The Legwarmers: The Ultimate 80's Tribute! Known for performances that convey deep emotion, Vega’s distinctive, “clear, unwavering voice” (Rolling Stone) has been described as “a cool, dry sandpaper-brushed near-whisper” by The Washington Post, with NPR Music noting that she “has been making vital, inventive music” throughout the course of her decades-long career. Bearing the stamp of a masterful storyteller who “observes the world with a clinically poetic eye” (The New York Times), Vega’s songs have tended to focus on city life, ordinary people and real-world subjects. Notably succinct and understated, her work is immediately recognizable—as utterly distinct and thoughtful as it was when her voice was first heard on the radio over 40 years ago.

I loved it. Wherever music was being played, I
wanted to go watch. His work with the EDM artist, Avicii, inspired Dan to create the genre-defying Southern Gothic album, released in 2017 to much critical acclaim. Tyminski would then showcase again his heart for bluegrass with the 2022 EP tribute to Tony Rice, One More Time Before You Go, which included guest performances by Molly Tuttle, Sam Bush, Dailey & Vincent, and Billy Strings. The following year saw the release of the full-length bluegrass album, God Fearing Heathen, which quickly hit #1 on Billboard’s Bluegrass Albums chart.

Over the course of his career, Tyminski has also evolved into a prolific songwriter, penning songs with Monty Criswell, Phillip Lammonds, Kristian Bush, Ashley Monroe, Chris Stapleton and many others.

Dan has been honored with 14 Grammy Awards and is a four-time Male Vocalist of the Year honoree by the International Bluegrass Music Association. He has also recorded instrumental or vocal harmony contributions for projects by Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, Brad Paisley, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Joan Osborne, Charlie Daniels, Kenny Chesney, LeAnn Rimes, Rob Thomas, and Charlie Haden, to name a few. If you’d like to learn more, please visit this link.

If you’re searching for insights into the state of the human condition in 2025, look no further than Puff of Smoke (Honey Jar/Thirty Tigers), the ninth album of original music from Grammy-nominated progressive Americana trio The Wood Brothers.

Less a literal soundtrack to uncertain times or a roadmap showing how to live through them, Puff of Smoke posits a happily contrarian outlook: Life can turn on a dime, and all we truly have is the moment at hand. And that’s perfectly fine. “We're not in control,” says guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Oliver Wood, “and that can be good news.”

Between the poetic observations of Oliver and his brother, bassist and vocalist Chris Wood — with percussionist and multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix completing the trio — Puff of Smoke is an 11-song collection brimming with joy in the face of challenges, delivering lyrical wisdom with the winking subtlety of John Prine and the musical hive mind of a seasoned group with two decades of shared experiences.

Fans who have hopped aboard at waypoints along the journey that began with their now classic 2006 debut Ways Not to Lose already know to expect a new drop from The Wood Brothers will bring inventive songwriting, a grounded lyrical wit, and an adventurous sweep of sonic avenues. Unpredictability is part of the listening experience.

“This album is a little bit schizophrenic and eclectic, and it goes in a few different directions,” says Oliver.

“There's a lot to unpack musically in this band, and it's been this evolutionary process over the years and on each record,” Chris continues. “Over time, the diversity of things we can do has all become part of our language.”

Largely recorded at The Studio Nashville, a creative space in the Sylvan Heights neighborhood that has become an essential companion to the band’s evolution, Puff of Smoke distills the trio’s curious musical minds, voracious appetite for the creative process, and love of spontaneity.

“When you're writing or performing, the hope is that your subconscious handles everything and your conscious, thinking, judging mind gets out of the way,” Chris says. “Because your subconscious is the most true, authentic piece of you. You're not judging yourself when your subconscious is speaking. That's how the best art comes about.”

Always looking to find new sounds to express in their music, the album’s opening track “Witness” dives deeper than ever into the pan-American songbook for inspiration, garnishing its groove with blasts of back-alley New Orleans brass. On “The Trick,” Jano found the song’s signature sound, an overdriven synth that sounds like it could be Clavinet, but is actually a Fender Rhodes pushed through distortion and octave pedals. He also manipulated an analog synth to conjure the underwater-calliope sounds on “Above All Others.” To perform the piano’s centerpiece melody on “Pray God Listens,” he played keys with one hand while reaching inside the piano with his other hand to mute the strings.

“What's really fun about making a record with this band is that we actually have no idea how we're going to arrange a song, or what instruments we're going to play, when we get to a recording session,” says Chris, whose years as a member of Medeski, Martin and Wood primed him for the ego-stripped musical collaborations that are a hallmark of The Wood Brothers. “That's why first takes are often the best. You don't have any ideas about the song yet.”

With only a general idea of the song structures — often limited to lyrics and basic chords — their improvisational recording process yielded plenty of first-take gold. The loose, front-stoop feel of “Slow Rise (To the Middle)” and “You Choose Me” are genuine; the final versions that made the album were actually the first times the trio played them together in full. As the band was working out the arrangements for the Cachito-Cuban groove of “Pray God Listens,” with all its Tom Waits whimsy, and the rolling, brass-accented “Witness,” co-producer Brook Sutton liked what he heard so much, he simply brought the microphones to them, not wanting to disturb any piece of the puzzle.

The group also finds inspiration in a shared focus on meditation and mindfulness. “Ways not to go crazy, basically,” Oliver admits. “Songs like ‘The Trick’ and even ‘Puff of Smoke’ and ‘Witness’ are very much about mindfulness,” he says. “‘The trick is not to give a damn’ — so, that’s detachment — or, ‘I'm just a witness’ — I'm just watching things happen. I'm not gonna be my feelings. I'm gonna watch 'em float by.

“Even a song like ‘Pray God Listens,’ which is a little bit humorous and cynical, ultimately it's a song of compassion and humility,” Oliver says. “It's meant to be light, but it's ambiguous enough that you can draw your own conclusion. You can take the cynicism part and the humor, or you can go a little deeper and find the compassion.”

Puff of Smoke is a reminder that life is both precious and precarious — a sentiment underscored by our current geopolitical moment and the unpredictable nature of life itself — and The Wood Brothers invite you to join the ride.

“Creativity is a winding road, not a straight path,” Jano says, before adding the essential caveat at the heart of the group’s ethos: “If you’re open to it.”

George Clanton doesn’t just produce gleaming electronic pop, he produces nostalgia too. The Los Angeles artist’s process involves tweaking synthesizer presets, but beyond searching for the right melodies and textures, he’s hoping to come upon a sound that strikes a spiritual chord. “I'm looking for something that triggers a memory or an emotion,” he says. His lyrics are direct transmissions from his soul: raw, often off-the-cuff, evocative. When you pair those words with the gauzy textures Clanton’s become known for, his music feels like a dreamy filter you can put over your own memories. Every moment feels a little more colorful, a little more comforting.

You can hear the impact of this approach in his upcoming third album—take fuzz-pop anthem “Fucking Up My Life.” The track is both raucous and soothing, and as Clanton’s distorted croons echo across swelling synths and crushing breakbeats, he offers a mantra: “It feels alright.”

It’s a fitting return for an artist who’s spent the last decade cutting through the noise. In addition to making music, he runs the 100% Electronica record label with his fellow pop mutator and wife Negative Gemini. He also spearheads events, including weekly livestreams on Twitch. Being extremely online has allowed Clanton’s fans access to the depths of his personality, to connect with his work more deeply. “I think of myself as the ultimate DIY person,” he says. “Working the George Clanton way has made for a really unique career that hasn’t yet been fully recognized.”

Growing up, Clanton knew he wanted to be an entertainer, but he didn’t know how. His hometown of Ridgeway, Virginia, had a NASCAR track but no concert venues or record stores. So MTV was his primary education: videos by artists like 311, The Prodigy, and the Bad Boy Records crew taught the art of showmanship. He downloaded a lot of music from Limewire. During one session, a mislabeled download of what he thought was Oasis turned out to be shoegaze band Brian Jonestown Massacre, opening him up to the vast world of underground music on the internet, which led him to help form the scene that would dream up vaporwave.

Under the monikers ESPRIT 空想 and Mirror Kisses, Clanton became a key figure of the early vaporwave scene through his meditative lo-fi productions. The genre was then known primarily for its use of samples, but his 2014 album virtua.zip was a landmark: the first of its kind to be built entirely from original compositions. He also started singing on his tracks back then, adding a human touch and another layer of emotional involvement to the developing genre. In 2015, he dropped both aliases in favor of his given name, a symbolic shedding of creative restraints.

In order to reproduce his internet success offline, Clanton hustled harder. Moving to Brooklyn in 2015, where he worked a day job and made music at night, provided that motivation. Seeking a label but unwilling to compromise, he started his own. The label and his first album under his birth name would share the same moniker: 100% Electronica. His 2018 follow-up, Slide, further revealed his gift for deeply moving pop. One of the album’s most powerful tracks, “You Lost Me There,” was inspired by Negative Gemini leaving for work. The mild melancholy of missing your person for a few hours started to feel like the end of the world: “I just didn't want to be alone because the house was empty,” Clanton says. “I try to find the extreme in the mundane.”

Clanton has also curated a tightly knit roster of artists ( Negative Gemini, Satin Sheets, Small Black, et al.) who continue to push the boundaries of vaporwave, internet music, and pop. He considers 100% Electronica his biggest achievement, pointing to the dedicated fans that see themselves in the music. “I feel like we've created a cultural identity out of thin air,” he says.

Clanton expanded upon that in 2019 with 100% ElectroniCON, the first vaporwave music festival, to give the community a physical space in which to interact. When live events were paused in 2020, he stayed connected through Virtual Utopia concerts, where artists perform in panoramic virtual reality environments, and weekly VR talk show THE BIG STREAM. Even though he had no framework for programming, Clanton taught himself to code using Python and C# languages in order to make these shows. He found a way to stay busy musically too. In a full-circle moment, he got to team up with one of his childhood inspirations, working with 311 frontman Nick Hexum on their psychedelic album George Clanton & Nick Hexum (2020), which landed Clanton on the Billboard charts for the first time (Top 100 Current Album Sales).

After a year spreading out across a number of projects, Clanton is now focusing on delivering a powerful sequel to Slide. Started almost immediately after Slide’s release, the new album finds him both musically and personally matured. It’s an elegant merging of all his past musical selves—of stirring rock, sweeping shoegaze, and niche electronics—augmented with more complex layers and physical instruments. It’s also a journey inwards as Clanton emphasizes personal reflection and self-improvement—themes he’s held close his whole career. “It's definitely something that I need to get out,” he says of the music. “I want people to know that George Clanton is better than ever and something amazing is coming just around the corner.”

About The Gringos:
Indie Rock band from Athens, GA. For Carter King, Thomas Johnson, and Daniel Womack — the band's three frontmen, with voices distinct enough to anchor their own songs and unified enough to sound like one band — being in Futurebirds has often meant being gone. They've traveled America's highways and backroads. They've seen its dive bar stages and amphitheater bleachers. With Far Out Country, though, they stop focusing on the horizon ahead of them and boldly live in the present. They’re no longer rushing toward the next destination. Far Out Country IS the destination.

A two-volume collection of 18 songs, Far Out Country casts the widest net of the band's career. Amplified anthems like "Sleepless in the Cage" — a loud, lovely tangle of electric guitar and harmonized voices — rub shoulders with the gentle acoustics of "Sienna Life." Rootsy rockers like "Sober Somewhere" give way to the atmospheric quiet of "All I Want." There are songs for daytime road trips and songs for nighttime campfires. Songs for sun-streaked landscapes of rolling green hills and songs for darkening skies of blue-black clouds. For a band that once drew praise from USA Today for "mixing Neil & Crazy Horse with My Morning Jacket," Futurebirds have never sounded so singular, making music that nods to their country-rock heroes while proudly avoiding classification altogether. As Johnson explains, "the longer we play together, the less our music sounds like it belongs to a genre, and the more it just sounds like Futurebirds."

With Far Out Country, it's not just about the music. It's about conversation. Since forming the band as students at the University of Georgia, Futurebirds have grown up together, making the transition from hometown heroes to national headliners. They're not undergrads anymore; they're fathers and family men, caught halfway between their growing responsibilities at home and their duties on the road. Far Out Country finds them talking honestly about life's moving targets and the evolving bonds that hold them together. "This is the sound of three people in genuine dialogue, giving their perspectives on similar stages in life," Johnson adds. "It feels like a conversation in a bar, late at night, or at somebody's house over drinks."

"There's a line from the song 'Featherbed' that talks about 'being in a constant state of becoming,'" says Womack. "That's important to us. We're adventurous people who want to create, and the best way to do that is to constantly discover yourself over the course of your entire life. A constant state of becoming yourself."

Released two years after the critically-acclaimed Easy Company, Far Out Country reunites the band with Grammy-winning producer Brad Cook (Waxahatchee, MJ Lenderman, Bon Iver). Half of the album's tracks were recorded at Sonic Ranch in the Texas borderlands. There, the band focused on live-in-the-studio performances that showcased the wild, sweaty spirit of their beloved stage shows — the same gigs that prompted Rolling Stone to call them "the most captivating rock act touring today." The other nine songs were recorded piece-by-piece in much smaller studios, with the band’s own Tom Myers producing four tracks. This was a different approach that required the bandmates to be methodical and deliberate with each layer of sound they added, and Futurebirds welcomed the challenge of fitting both recording styles into a congruent whole.

"We wanted to complete the story with Brad," King explains. "There was unfinished business, so it felt right to work with him again. It was a continuation of what we'd been doing, and a bit of starting from scratch, too."

It felt right to try new things, too. On previous albums, each of Futurebirds' three songwriters would typically sing lead vocals on his own material. This time, the guys bent those self-imposed rules. "Carter wrote the title track," Womack notes, "but I wound up singing it. We've never really done that before, and it opened us up, creatively."

Old habits have remained, too. Futurebirds are still "masters of reverb-steeped country rock infused with Southern charm," as The New Yorker once gushed, and longtime fans will find plenty to recognize in these songs. The pedal steel guitar still drifts skyward, its gorgeous textures gradually disappearing into the ether. Bassist Brannen Miles and drummer Tom Myers still offer a blend of pastoral punch, loping groove, and loud bash 'n' crash. The three frontmen still harmonize like lifelong friends, their drawling voices blending into one, their distinct personalities coalescing into something rich and cohesive. Far Out Country doesn't showcase a rebranded group as much as a reenergized one, and Futurebirds have never defined themselves so clearly before.

"If you spend your present moment too wrapped up in the future, or the past, you'll miss what's right in front of you," says King. "This record is us trying to take an honest look at ourselves, and where we’ve been – and asking if the beliefs we’ve carried along the way are still serving us, where we are right now.”

Sequenced into two stylistically-distinct halves — Volume 1, also known as The Day World, and Volume II, also known as The Night World — Far Out Country is a soundtrack to self-discovery. Futurebirds aren't afraid to ask themselves the hard questions, even if their songwriting makes it all sound easy. Here, they invite us into their world: a place where the jukebox is great and the conversation never lags. They encourage their audience to completely immerse themselves in the experience, too, unveiling the full project as a double-vinyl release months before uploading Far Out Country’s second half to streaming platforms. For those craving the full record, the physical vinyl is the only way to hear the entire album early.

"It's an inside joke amongst us that with each album, we think it's our best work yet," says Womack. "And the other side of the joke is, we're always right! We're lucky to be able to say that."

This event is 18 & over only. Marrying nostalgic storytelling to nuanced, folk-infused indie rock, the Richmond, Virginia band embroiders heartfelt melody and harmony with acoustic and electric instrumentation to create a 12-song rumination on time, love and personal growth that’s equal parts urgent epiphany and contented exhalation.

“Everybody says people don’t listen to albums anymore,” mulled Carbon Leaf frontman Barry Privett, holed up in a coastal cottage. “So, the challenge for us was to make something that felt good to get through from beginning to end … to listen to like a story.”

Originally formed as a college cover band in 1992 and with over 3,500 famously enthused live shows together, Carbon Leaf helped to define the aughts indie rock that they ultimately outgrew and outlasted. They first earned national recognition with “The Boxer,” a song that won the American Music Awards 2002 New Music Award and made Carbon Leaf the first unsigned band to perform before millions on the AMAs.

“The Boxer” entered regular radio rotation, Carbon Leaf’s tours grew bigger and better, and within a couple of years they quit their day jobs and inked a record deal. The band’s fanbase snowballed, drawn to their infectious spirit of commitment, empathy, communion, and selfreliance – not to mention supremely crafted songs with ultra-relatable, thought-provoking lyrics.

After a trio of charting albums for Vanguard Records, multiple songwriting awards and headlining shows, Carbon Leaf opted to return to the complete creative control of their indie roots. Guitarist Terry Clark, who co-founded the band with Privett and multi-instrumentalist Carter Gravatt, converted his garage into the band’s Two-Car Studio, where they’ve recorded releases for their own Constant Ivy imprint ever since. Carbon Leaf’s DIY spirit even extended to re-recording their three Vanguard albums in order to regain the rights.

Due in September, Time is the Playground is Carbon Leaf’s first full-length album in a decade, during which they released two EPS and a 27-song live performance album and Blu-ray. Time is the Playground gathers the best of songs written, in fits and starts, over 15 years, alongside brand new ideas. Privett dusted off old demos and shut himself away for months to finish their stories, while also honing recent compositions. With Clark engineering, Carbon Leaf – completed by longtime bassist Jon Markel and drummer Jesse Humphrey – spent a year and a half recording and mixing the resulting songs.

“Thinking about these disparate pieces of music, I began ruminating on time itself,” Privett recalled. “The band’s been together a long time. You mature a bit and see yourself in place on the timeline … rolling around the scenes of love and growth.”

Masterfully melding saturated AC/DC guitar and squelchy Cars synth, “Backmask 1983” is a fun flipbook of evocative era emblems – Farah Fawcett, “Satanic Panic,” Time Life Books, Bigfoot and more – that traverses the simultaneous nexus of Privett’s childhood/adolescence and the world’s analog/digital ages. It’s about morphing into a new person and a new planet with wideeyed wonder and a longing to believe. “Without a whole lot of information, the mystery of things felt so heightened,” recalled Privett of growing up pre-Internet. “I wanted to capture some of that but also have fun with it.”

“I want what we create to resonate with ourselves, to the level that we want to play it for a long time to come, and where we want others to hear it and experience it,” Privett concluded. “Hopefully, listeners can glean the pieces from it that they identify with.”

Time is the Playground will be accompanied by the tireless touring almost synonymous with Carbon Leaf, who’ve become a model for self-managing bands in the digital landscape.

Thankful Dead ft. After a dozen highly acclaimed full-length albums, remix LPs, concert recordings, and over two decades of incendiary live performances that have thrilled audiences worldwide, Thievery Corporation's music and message is more relevant and important now than ever.

That lack of filter enabled Garza and Hilton to mine their musical inspirations and create one of the most unique bodies of work in electronic music, respectfully incorporating tastes of international cultural styles, without ever falling into the trap of cultural appropriation. "We always wondered: with so much incredible music in the world, why would anyone limit themselves to one genre? Well, we found out — it's far easier to stay in one lane than to genre hop!" laughs Hilton. Garza elaborates: "When we started, we were influenced by music from all over the world, flipping through bins in second hand record stores for LP's from Brazil, India, Iran, Jamaica, jazz records…..we wanted to make music where you didn't know whether it was recorded today or a decade ago." Thievery Corporation's music has always looked toward the future while paying homage to the past, starting with their groundbreaking debut LP, 1996's "Sounds From The Thievery Hi-Fi," which both introduced the world to Garza and Hilton as producers and set their course as pioneers of song-based electronic music with wildly diverse vocalists.

The band's legendary D.C. headquarters, the Eighteenth Street Lounge, became an epicenter for a diverse group of people and staff from all over the world, which in turn had a profound influence on their musical output. "D.C. was very cosmopolitan, lots of places to see international live music and jazz," says Garza. "We'd run into people from all over the world and invite them to play with us — so Thievery became an extension of that, both on our records and in our live performances." Indeed, Hilton and Garza's "Outernational" approach created a world reflected by the artist's ideals of diversity and acceptance. "25 years after we started, it seems like the world is catching up," Garza opines. "Social consciousness is more mainstream, awareness of the importance of inclusivity…it's so encouraging to see so many people working towards these goals in America." Hilton agrees. "Thievery is a reflection of who we are, it evolved from our musical tastes. Artists who were for the people, like The Clash, Fela Kuti, Manu Chao were so important to us, and engaging in social ideas has always been a part of what we've tried to do." People don't refer to Thievery Corporation as "World Music," but it's safe to say that their music and ethos is global in its scope and ahead of its time at every turn.

In a live setting, Thievery Corporation avoids any electronic dance music tropes. Yes, you'll dance, sweat and put your hands in the air….but their concerts are true performances, with a killer band of players and an array of vocalists from diverse global cultures. No two shows feel the same. "Our shows are VERY live, lots of energy, the com-bination of multiple instruments and singers that take you on a musical journey," says Garza. "We have a sitar player, songs are in different languages — it's a multicultural experience, people connect to the band and to each other, it's beautiful." With a world cautiously beginning to emerge from isolation and towards communal events, Garza is eager to return Thievery Corporation to live performance. "I feel like people have been waiting to celebrate together after being forced apart for too long. We're all craving that."

Eric Hilton's presence at Thievery gigs, however, has become an increasingly rare event. "I never really embraced touring; some of the world tours were interesting, seeing new places and cultures," he says. "For me, touring was tourism. The creative process of making music is more my thing." And Thievery Corporation have brought the sounds of the world to listeners throughout each of their albums. "There are so many highlights for me. 2014's Saudade is my favorite record that we've done, a real creative stretch for us. Quiet music is hard to make! Symphonik also. To hear our music done with an orchestra was incredible." Hilton concedes that over time live performance influenced the studio records. "After Cosmic Game (2011), we orchestrated jam sessions and built the records from those. For Temple of I and I (2014), we went to Jamaica to jam and record, which gave that record a different feel and authenticity."

Looking back over their career, Rob Garza and Eric Hilton acknowledge that what drives each of them may be different, but the mashup of personalities, sounds, cultures and experiences birthed something wholly unique. "We love all kinds of music, which is why Thievery Corporation sounds the way it does," the founding partners agree. "We couldn't possibly incorporate all our tastes into the music, but we do it more than most." By not following trends or the whims of major labels, and embracing the cultural diversities that make the world such a wondrous place, Thievery Corporation has created a legacy that runs deep and continues to expand.

"Over 25 years, we've left nothing undone. We far exceeded what we thought we would do," Hilton and Garza agree. And Thievery Corporation's music will continue on to reverberate and influence the next generation of listeners with an ear toward a global musical experience.

“Two singer-songwriters sit on the edge of a cliff…”

With these words, we are drawn into the world of Both Sides Now - a theatrical concert that explores the music and lives of long-time friends and one-time lovers, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Four musicians, out of work at the same time got together because honestly, they liked to play music. Thus, the Skip Castro Band was born. A mutual love of rhythm 'n blues, swing, boogie woogie and rock 'n roll became the foundation.

Over the next ten years, Skip Castro would become staples on the East Coast between Boston and Atlanta playing every bar, club, music hall, and college in between. All the while having a great time. Called one of the best party bands ever, Skip Castro brings the party every time they take the stage.

And who haven’t they played with? Muddy Waters, Big Joe Turner, Bo Diddley, James Brown, Chuck Berry, Buddy Guy, James Cotton, Albert Collins, Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Yardbirds, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, George Thorogood and the Destroyers, the Nighthawks, the Kinks, Kenny Loggins and a host of others....

Fast forward 45 years and the same four guys are still playing together. Why? Because even though they stopped playing full time a while back, there's a unique groove and spirit that exists when Skip plays. They've played with other musicians, but the greatest satisfaction comes when these four get together.

Who are these guys anyhow? Undoubtedly, you've been asked that countless times. His machine gun piano attack and manic stage personality always kicks things into overdrive. His favorite movie is Goodfellas.

Charlie Pastorfield, Vocals/Bass: Came to the University of Virginia from the U.S. Virgin Islands, and has played guitar and bass in a long list of Charlottesville bands including The Believers, Mama Tried, Alligator, and The Gladstones. His favorite movie is Ikiru.

Corky Schoonover, Drums: Started a band with Charlie when they both arrived at UVa . He spent some time at the Berklee School of Music, returned to Cville to join The AllStars, and then started the Skip Castro Band. He is a successful fantasy football league owner, and his favorite movie is The Godfather

Bo Randall, Vocals/Guitar: Chose the University of Virginia for a great education, but fate had something different in mind. Stanley Jordan

In 1984, well before the explosion of extended instrumental concerts, an improvisational band playing original music named Indecision emerged out of Charlottesville, Virginia. Drawing from a wide variety of influences, including The Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, The Band, Steely Dan, and Little Feat, as well as the more complex rhythmic and harmonic structure of many jazz artists, Indecision forged a unique sound in the relatively new movement of improvisational music known today as the jam band scene.

In a career that took flight in 1985 with commercial and critical acclaim, guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan has consistently displayed a chameleonic musical persona of openness, imagination, versatility and maverick daring. Be it bold reinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits, to blazing straight ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational works-solo or with a group-Jordan can always be counted on to take listeners on breathless journeys into the unexpected.

Key to Jordan's fast-track acclaim was his mastery of a special technique on the guitar's fretboard. Instead of conventional strumming and picking, Jordan's innovative "touch technique" is an advanced form of two-handed tapping. While a handful of other players were using similar techniques, Stanley's fluid, multi-layered textures and sheer virtuosity raised the bar for excellence. But his technique, though impressive, is always a means to a musical end. His music is imbued with a warmth and sensitivity that has captured the imagination of listeners worldwide. A classically trained pianist before playing guitar, Jordan wanted greater freedom in voicing chords on his guitar, so he applied piano principles to do so. Jordan's touch technique allows the guitarist to play melody and chords simultaneously with an unprecedented level of independence. It also allows Jordan to play simultaneously on two different guitars, or even on guitar and piano. He says that "I think of it as a single instrument, but one with a wide range of tonal colors-that's why I do it."

To date Jordan has performed in over 60 countries on 6 continents. He has performed at many festivals, including the Kool Jazz Festival, the Concord Jazz Festival, and the Montreaux International Jazz Festival. During the 1980s he collaborated with a diverse array of artists, including performances with Art Blakey and Richie Cole and recordings with Stanley Clarke and Kenny Rogers. The track with Rogers, "Morning Desire", became America's #1 country song in 1986. Later Jordan became a frequent guest with Les Paul during Paul's legendary Monday nights at Iridium in New York. Today Jordan performs frequently as a soloist and with his band, as well as collaborating with other guitarists such as Kevin Eubanks, Sharon Isbin and Muriel Anderson. He's also a frequent guest with jam bands such as the Dave Matthews Band, the String Cheese Incident, Phil Lesh, Moe and Umphrey's McGee.

Jordan has received four Grammy nominations. His most recent album "Friends" was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. Los Angeles Times jazz critic Leonard Feather wrote, "Genius is a word often tossed around in musical circles, but it has been rightfully applied to Stanley Jordan."
Stanley Jordan was born in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. He began his music career at age six studying piano, then shifting his focus to guitar at age eleven. He then began playing in rock and soul bands. In 1976, while still in high school, Jordan performed with Quincy Jones and tied for first place as a soloist at the Reno International Jazz Festival. In 1981 he earned a BA in music from Princeton University, where he studied theory and composition with composer Milton Babbitt and computer music with composer Paul Lansky. While still at Princeton, Jordan performed with Benny Carter and Dizzy Gillespie.

Jordan came to prominence with the release of his 1985 album Magic Touch, a revolutionary project that placed him at the forefront of re-launching legendary Blue Note Records into a contemporary entity in jazz and beyond, as also established the then-twenty-something Jordan as among the most distinctive and refreshing new voices of the electric guitar. Jordan had begun applying his unique technique to his already exemplary traditional playing ten years prior to the Magic Touch album. Though Jordan showcased the technique in a variety of musical styles from swing to rock, it was smooth jazz radio support for his singular versions of "The Lady in My Life" (first recorded by Michael Jackson) and the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" that sent Magic Touch to the top of Billboard's jazz chart for a stunning and record-breaking 51 weeks. The album became a gold-seller (over 500,000 sold in the U.S. alone) - outstanding for any jazz or instrumental CD.

Subsequent albums found Jordan ushering his audience into deeper levels of his artistry and stretching his music beyond stylistic boundaries. These projects included a solo guitar album titled Standards Volume 1 (1986) where Stanley made the bold statement that songs by the likes of Stevie Wonder and Jimi Hendrix deserved recognition as standards just as much as older chestnuts like Hoagy Charmichael's "Georgia On My Mind." He followed that with the dance-pop album Flying Home (1988) and the especially edgy Cornucopia (1990), which spanned the gamut from straight-ahead jazz recorded live to multi-dimensional originals recorded in the studio. Still later in 1994 after a move to Arista Records (then helmed by pop music maverick Clive Davis), he recorded the bracingly eclectic Bolero album, featuring covers of Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon," Jimi Hendrix's "Drifting," his original "Plato's Blues" and the CD's centerpiece, a 17-minute arrangement of Ravel's "Bolero", which flowed seamlessly between rock, African, Latin, "groove" and "industrial" sections. During this era, Jordan also made history by creating the seminal "startup" sound for the first generation of Power Macintosh computers.

In 2002, Stanley released the album Dreams of Peace with the Italian band Novecento. It was remixed and re-released in the USA in 2004 on Steve Vai's Favored Nations label. Independently, he recorded two CDs: Ragas (a collaboration with musicians from India featuring Jay Kishor on sitar) and Relaxing Music for Difficult Situations Volume 1, an audio extension of his interest in music therapy. In 2007 Jordan signed with Mack Avenue Records and released State of Nature in 2008 and Friends in 2011. For Friends, he invited musical guests including guitarists Bucky Pizzarelli, Mike Stern, Russell Malone and Charlie Hunter; violinist Regina Carter; saxophonists Kenny Garrett and Ronnie Laws; trumpeter Nicholas Payton; bassists Christian McBride and Charnett Moffett; and drummer Kenwood Dennard. The results proved truly outstanding on numbers ranging from a Bela Bartok piece to a Katy Perry pop smash, a heady original blues and three jazz classics spanning swing, cool, samba and modern.

Jordan has been known to TV and film audiences as well. In 1987 he made a cameo appearance in the Blake Edwards movie Blind Date, starring Bruce Willis and Kim Basinger. In the tribute film, Les Paul: He Changed the Music Jordan performed with a guitar supergroup including Les Paul himself, Eddie Van Halen, BB King, Steve Miller, David Gilmour, and Brian Setzer. In 1995 Jordan created the score for the short film One Red Rose, starring Hill Harper and Victoria Rowell, directed by Charlie Jordan. In 1996 he created the score for an ABC afternoon TV special Daddy's Girl, directed by Diane Wynter. Since the mid 80s he has performed on numerous television shows, including The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, The David Letterman Show and the Grammy Awards. One notable appearance was a duet on the Tonight Show with the late rock superstar Robert Palmer.

Stanley is committed to music as an artistic, spiritual, and even health-promoting endeavor. He has been immersed for more than a decade in music therapy, towards which he is now working for a master's degree at Arizona State University. His involvement with music therapy leads him to do outreach in schools, hospitals and other venues wherever he tours. He is an artist-spokesperson for the American Music Therapy Association, and he has done numerous lectures and demonstrations on the healing applications of music.

Jordan has maintained an extensive and consistent international touring schedule. In between tour stops he is now at work on his next highly anticipated album from Mack Avenue Records, for release next year.

Jordan is currently a resident of Sedona, Arizona. He has one daughter, Julia. Julia Jordan is a singer/songwriter living in Lancaster, Pennsylvania who sometimes collaborates with her dad.

This show is General Admission standing on the floor and reserved balcony.

Zoso: The Ultimate Led Zeppelin Experience

Celebrating 31 years of touring in 2026, Zoso has become one of the most iconic and respected Led Zeppelin tribute experiences in the world, having played over 4,900 shows in all 50 states and internationally. & Rope: Bare Bones

SOMETHING IS WORKING UP ABOVE MY HEAD

One night in the middle of the night there were a series of noises coming from above which lead to a series of thoughts. It sounded like something was working. Building something.. A nest for its family? A trap for its prey? This led to more thoughts about unseen things at work. A God? A voice in your head? It all feels kind of made up until someone responds to it.

Less means more. That’s kind of always how it’s been with us. This time the rules were simple: we can only use what we work with live and whatever we put down on tape must be accomplishable on a stage in a live setting. That’s always seemed to be when we’re at our best. Or most twitchy. Many times we’ve made records that we loved and then, after figuring out how we’d perform it live, we end up falling in love with the live arrangement because being a 2 piece band it took some real risk and struggle which led to innovation which gave it a whole new life. (Consider the tortured grape.) So with this one we just started there and worked backwards. The result encapsulates, more than anything we’ve done before, the sound of our live performance. Resulting in what one might consider by definition, a definitive album.

The summer and fall leading up to recording we spent writing songs, hanging out with family in Colorado and playing shows opening for The Wood Brothers and Gregory Alan Isokov, both of whom have large audiences. So each night we were playing in front of a lot of people, many of whom had never heard of us. We decided to take those opportunities to rattle our comfort zone cage and try out a bunch of brand new, just written songs and basically learn how to play them in front a few thousand people. The songs would grow and change show to show, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. Maybe we go down in flames? Maybe something beautiful happens while it’s burning? We happily embraced the chaos. That’s kind of always how it’s been with us.

We had a new song that initially neither of us thought that much of called ‘Love Song From A Dog’. During one of the first nights of the Isakov run we decided, on stage, mid set, to try it out because the show was going well and the audience was warm. To our surprise, it kind of killed and became a fan favorite moment of our set each night. And honestly in all the years of doing this we’ve never had so many people send us messages or reach out about any one specific song as they did this one.. It just goes to show us that we don’t know anything. When it came time to record it we thought it’d be fitting and a nice touch to have Greg sing on it since it was his audience who basically fostered it into being by giving us the confidence and encouragement we needed to see it the way they did. He generously obliged and the song was instantly elevated by the sincerity and richness of mood that colors his voice.

The two of us can’t help but be obsessed with duality. The song ‘Two Wolves’ is a meditation about two conflicting energies competing for power. The first time we ever played it was on New Years Eve at Rupp Arena opening for Tyler Childers in front of 15k or so country music fans who surely were like “what the hell is this” but to us it seemed 100 percent appropriate because, if we have a song made for an arena, this is probably it. A fuzzy, thick riffed stomper with a hypnotic head bob refrain. It was a big show on a big stage and we were feeling our saltiest rock n roll consummate professional selves in that moment, so we went wide open with it off the rip because well, we had to.

For those who are new here we’ve spent the last decade or so bouncing around in the ‘Americana’ realm quite a bit. Getting branded into that world was admittedly a bit of a shoulder shrug for us as we’ve always identified more as messy, misfit, folk songwriters and electric yarn spinners who’s harmonies land somewhere between sweet and spit.. But the people were paying attention and we were building a fan base so we kind of felt like “who were we to tell them who we weren’t?” But when you go all the way to Europe and are standing on a stage in front of a few hundred Scandinavians who are dressed in head to toe denim and cowboy hats expecting something a little more specific, we can’t help but feel like we’re about to confuse some people. We will often find ourselves playing an outdoor, ‘free in the park’ type of concert series where a Male and Female with 2 guitars and beautiful harmonies will be booked as the opener and then we’ll take the stage and proceed to be a little louder and maybe a little more brash than was anticipated.. It’s always kind of been this way with us. The joke in our camp when this happens goes something like: And for tonight’s entertainment we have for you “The What We Thought They Were’s” followed by the “Louder Than We Thoughts”! Recently we did a gig where the spokesperson said to us just before we went on ‘so maybe don’t come out with your heaviest guitar stuff and your 808 bass bullshit right off the rip.. there are kids and old people here and they’ll leave” (he was trying to be helpful). We politely told him “Don’t worry, we have a plan”.. and then again opened with Two Wolves, with its loud guitar stuff and its 808 bullshit, followed by a dynamic set where we touched on all the different things we do and everyone proceeded to have a great time. That’s kind of always how it’s been with us.

Something Is Working Up Above My Head is a catalog of vulnerable characters with sweet and sordid narratives.

‘Colorado River’ is a song about a boy and his Dad disposing of bodies in various ways as the water level recedes and dark surprises surface. The hot dog bun line was initially supposed to be a place holder because it sounded funny and it rhymed, but then we sang it sooo many times over the summer that it built a little hot dog shack and moved in forever. I still think it’s kind of dumb but it’s also kind of great. For those who pay attention it's a pretty obvious John Prine nod. I’d like to think he handed us the hot dog bun like a relay baton on his way to the great mystery. Macabre pairs well with a side of humor.

‘Piranhanana’ is about a boy growing up in a house of sex workers and being fine with it with a little meditation, while his sister struggles to find her zen. ‘I’d be lying’ is about navigating a crisis with a long time friend. ‘Double Lines’ follows the journey of a young woman thru pregnancy tests, covid tests and various other forms of duality and two-ness.

‘Something is Working’ and ‘Dass Hymn’ (referring to Ram Dass) were the last 2 songs written and added to this collection of songs. They book end the record with questions about what, if anything, is pulling the strings? In the closing moments of the last song, 3 generations of our family all sing together about how nobody knows what happens at the end. And in all the not knowing, it’s comforting to sing with your family. His rich tenor voice, emotional delivery, and ability to effortlessly move between contemporary pop, adult contemporary, inspirational music, and timeless standards have earned him a loyal, multi-generational audience.

Aiken’s career has extended well beyond the recording studio, including a Broadway run in Monty Python’s Spamalot and a reunion with Ruben Studdard in 2018 for Ruben & Clay’s First Annual Christmas Carol Family Fun Pageant Spectacular Reunion Show, which The New York Times hailed as “a Christmas miracle.” The pair reunited once again in 2023 for a tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their landmark American Idol season before competing together on Fox’s The Masked Singer in 2024 as The Beets.

Beyond his music, Aiken has long been an advocate for children with disabilities. Drawing on his pre-fame experience as a special education teacher, he co-founded the National Inclusion Project in 2003, which has since helped thousands of kids with disabilities take part in camps, after-school programs, and community activities in more than 40 states. He also spent a decade as a UNICEF ambassador, traveling to Afghanistan, Somalia, Indonesia, Mexico, Uganda, and Kenya to advocate for children's protection and education.

In 2026, Aiken began an exciting new musical chapter with the release of his first new music in eighteen years. His single "Rewind," written by Colton Avery and Grammy Award-winning producer and songwriter Dave Audé and produced by Audé, marked both a return to recording and a fresh creative direction. The release coincided with Aiken's homecoming to the American Idol stage, where he debuted the song during the season finale.

As he reintroduces himself to longtime fans and new listeners alike, Aiken is once again focused on what has always defined his career: exceptional songs, unforgettable performances, and one of the most recognizable voices in popular music. "Rewind" is the first offering from a new full-length studio album, due September 25, 2026, his first in nearly two decades.

Alaska Thunderfuck 5000 is an extraterrestrial phenomenon from the planet Glamtr0n.
